The Nigerian Army has clarified the delay in paying the feeding allowance to troops stationed at the Zungeru Hydro Electricity Dam Project in Niger State, where they provide security for Chinese workers. According to the Army, the delay is due to the late receipt of funds from the concerned institution and not because the funds were diverted by a senior officer, as suggested by an online media report.
Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, stated that troops deployed at the Chinese company in Niger State have historically been paid in installments by the Nigerian Army upon receiving funds from the institution. The last installment of Ration Cash Allowances (RCA) from the institution expired on February 28, 2023. To address the payment gap, the Army headquarters paid the troops for the period from March 1 to June 30, 2023, in order to improve their working conditions.
The Nigerian Army emphasized that the RCA for the troops was not diverted by any senior officers, as alleged in the online publication. It also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of troops and maintaining integrity, transparency, and accountability in troop welfare administration.
