The Nigerian government is taking swift action to address the food scarcity and hardship faced by citizens across the country. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has announced that the Ministry will commence the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of grains to all 36 states this week, as approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Kyari stated that the Ministry is collaborating closely with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Department of State Service (DSS) to ensure that the grains reach the intended recipients in the correct quantities and packaging. This coordinated effort aims to streamline the distribution process and prevent any misappropriation or mishandling of the much-needed food supplies.

In addition to the grain distribution, the Minister revealed that 58,500 metric tons of milled rice from major rice millers will be released into the market. This measure is designed to stabilize the supply and availability of rice, a staple food in many Nigerian households, and mitigate the impact of the recent unfortunate events involving the looting of foodstuff warehouses.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation and expressing empathy towards those affected by the hardships, Kyari assured citizens of the government’s unwavering commitment to their well-being. He emphasized that the distribution of grains and the release of milled rice into the market are just the beginning of a series of programs aimed at alleviating the food crisis and providing relief to vulnerable communities.

The Minister’s announcement comes at a crucial time when many Nigerians are grappling with the challenges of food scarcity and economic hardship. By taking decisive action and leveraging the resources of various government agencies, the administration aims to mitigate the impact of the crisis and ensure that essential food items reach those in need across the country.
