Insecurity plaguing the nation
The Senate took decisive action yesterday, summoning key figures in the security apparatus to address the worsening insecurity plaguing the nation. Among those summoned were the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, along with other top officials. Additionally, the House of Representatives joined in, resolving to invite the NSA and heads of security agencies to discuss pressing security concerns.
During the Senate session, it was emphasized that the presence of Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, and other key figures was crucial for effective deliberations. While some were present, the absence of Musa was noted, prompting Senate President Godswill Akpabio to stress the importance of their attendance at the upcoming session on Tuesday.
Concurrently, the House of Representatives addressed the need for improved security measures in the Federal Capital Territory, urging Minister Nyesom Wike to install security cameras and equip operatives with necessary gadgets. Additionally, a motion by Dominic Okafor called for the deployment of National Identification Numbers (NIN) by security agencies to combat kidnapping, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
In response to these mounting security challenges, NSA Ribadu advocated for an integrated approach to security, emphasizing the importance of addressing root causes and promoting resilience in communities. Speaking at the UK-Nigeria Security Defence Partnership Dialogue, Ribadu highlighted the need for collaboration in countering violent extremism and fostering sustainable peace and prosperity.
Echoing Ribadu’s sentiments, UK National Security Adviser Tim Barrow affirmed the commitment of both countries to enhancing their partnership in addressing security threats. He emphasized the shared objectives of upholding regional and international peace and expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s dedication to the partnership.
The dialogue between the two nations serves as a platform for advancing shared security objectives and deepening cooperation in tackling terrorism, countering violent extremism, defending against cyber threats and Insecurity plaguing the nation. Both Nigeria and the UK reaffirmed their commitment to working together to address evolving security challenges and strengthen their mutual security and defence partnership.
