Leaders Urge Sacrifice, Prayer, and Peace Amid Economic and Security Challenges
As Muslims across Nigeria joined millions of faithful around the world to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and several state governors have called for unity, faith, and resilience, emphasizing the season’s core values of sacrifice, devotion, hope, and compassion.
In heartfelt messages shared nationwide, political leaders used the solemn occasion to rally citizens around the shared ideals of service, nation-building, and religious tolerance—even as many Nigerians continue to grapple with the ripple effects of economic reforms and rising insecurity.
Tinubu: “The Toughest Days Are Behind Us”
President Tinubu, who observed Eid prayers in Lagos, described the holy celebration as a moment for gratitude and sober reflection.
“Eid-el-Kabir reminds us of our responsibilities beyond faith: to show resilience, tolerance, compassion, and dedication to the progress of our beloved country,” the President said.
Tinubu acknowledged that Nigeria’s journey had not been without challenges, but assured the nation that key economic indicators were beginning to improve.
“Though some doubted our direction, the steadfastness of public and private sector leaders, along with the support of Nigerians, is yielding results. We are entering a new era of renewed hope and prosperity,” he declared.
First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also extended warm greetings to Muslims, urging citizens to embrace the spirit of generosity and to remember the less privileged.
“This is a time to show kindness, obedience, and faith. Let us extend love and support to our neighbours, especially the needy,” she said.
Akpabio, Senate Leaders Call for Peace and Patience
Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the importance of peace, unity, and interfaith harmony, calling on Nigerians to use the festival as an opportunity to foster national cohesion.
“Let us remain patient and resilient in our collective pursuit of progress. May Allah bless our nation with peace and prosperity,” he stated.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for national prayers and continued support for government efforts to overcome present challenges.
Governors Amplify the Call for Unity, Sacrifice, and Prayer
From the north to the south, governors issued messages urging reflection, prayer, and compassion as citizens marked the significant Islamic festival.
In Borno State, Governor Babagana Zulum called on citizens to remember the sacrifices of troops battling insurgency and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring security across the region.
“Prayer is key to our collective success,” Zulum said, referencing a recent statewide day of fasting that drew massive participation. “We will not rest until peace is fully restored.”
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris described prayer as a vital tool for national development and encouraged citizens to heal fractured relationships during the festive period.
In Kaduna State, Governor Uba Sani emphasized intercessory prayers for Nigeria’s leaders, urging all to support efforts at national rebirth.
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo reminded citizens of Prophet Ibrahim’s example and encouraged responsible celebrations anchored on generosity and submission to God’s will.
“Let us extend a hand of fellowship to our neighbours, regardless of faith. Eid is a time for peaceful coexistence,” he said.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun urged Muslims to embody the season’s essence by sharing their blessings and building harmony across religious lines.
“In these challenging times, let us strengthen our bonds of friendship and unity,” he said.
In Kwara, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq called for unwavering faith in God and Nigeria, advocating peaceful coexistence and support for sustainable development.
Suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara issued a reflective message, acknowledging the resilience of the people amid political uncertainty and assuring citizens that steps are being taken to stabilise the state’s economy and governance.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda focused on agriculture as the backbone of the state’s economy. He offered prayers for abundant rain and a prosperous harvest, urging residents to take advantage of the government’s support programmes.
“This Eid comes at the start of the rainy season, a lifeline for our farmers,” Radda said. “Let us be kind, reflect deeply, and embrace sacrifice.”
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde praised the Muslim community’s contribution to the state and reminded residents to stay vigilant during the celebrations.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility. If you see something, say something,” he urged.
