Lagos – President Bola Tinubu, long regarded as the undisputed political godfather of Lagos State, is facing an unprecedented challenge as his grip on the Lagos State House of Assembly weakens. However, in a dramatic show of defiance, 36 of the 40 lawmakers pushed back the security forces, entered the chambers, and passed a vote of confidence in Speaker Meranda.
A Rebellion Against Tinubu’s Authority

His decade-long backing of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker had been seen as a symbol of his control over the legislature. Meranda, who initially considered resigning under pressure from the APC, was moved to tears by the overwhelming support from her colleagues. “If we feel the former speaker is not representing us or the people well, we have the right to elect a new leader. That is democracy,” said Sabur Oluwa, one of the lawmakers.
The crisis has put Tinubu in a difficult position. While he has remained publicly silent, reports suggest that he is uncomfortable with Meranda’s rise, fearing it could set a dangerous precedent for his political dominance. His allies have reportedly pressured the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), a powerful APC organ, to intervene and push for Obasa’s reinstatement. However, the lawmakers have stood firm, insisting that Meranda remains their choice.
Obasa’s Defiance and Legal Battle
Despite being ousted, Mudashiru Obasa has refused to go quietly. He has filed a lawsuit challenging his impeachment, arguing that the plenary session that removed him was unconstitutional because the house was still in recess. Obasa has also continued to hold rallies and street processions in his Agege constituency, further stoking tensions.
His confidence stems from the belief that he still enjoys Tinubu’s support. This perception is reinforced by the apparent partisanship of the secret police, which answers directly to the president. However, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who has a strained relationship with Obasa, is reportedly uneasy about the former speaker’s possible return.
Tinubu’s Political Headache
The Lagos Assembly crisis comes at a delicate time for Tinubu, who is already grappling with national challenges. His loss in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election was a significant blow, exposing vulnerabilities in his political stronghold. Analysts warn that mishandling the current crisis could further erode his influence in the state.
“The option available to the president is to hearken to the voice of his people. The lawmakers have made it clear that they want Meranda,” said Fouad Oki, an APC leader. Oki also noted that Meranda’s royal lineage in Lagos makes her a formidable figure, and sidelining her could have unintended consequences.
However, Obasa’s grassroots appeal and loyalty to Tinubu complicate matters. The president’s allies argue that Obasa is vital to maintaining the APC’s dominance in Lagos, particularly ahead of future elections.
Opposition Seizes the Moment
The crisis has provided ammunition for the opposition, which has criticized Tinubu for interfering in state matters. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu’s main rival in the 2023 election, accused the president of neglecting national issues to focus on Lagos politics. “Tinubu should focus on bringing Nigeria out of the mess he plunged the country into, rather than interfering in state matters,” Abubakar said.

As the crisis drags on, Tinubu faces a critical decision. His handling of the situation will not only determine the fate of the Lagos Assembly but also shape his political legacy. Analysts urge him to tread carefully, warning that any misstep could further weaken the APC’s hold on Lagos.
