Tinubu Has Lost Support, Holds 91% Disapproval in North and Southeast – El-Rufai
Former Kaduna State Governor and Social Democratic Party (SDP) chieftain, Nasir El-Rufai, has launched a scathing critique of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, declaring that the administration has lost public trust and support in key regions across Nigeria.
Speaking on Monday evening during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, El-Rufai claimed that President Tinubu now holds a 91% disapproval rating in the North and Southeast, according to internal polling conducted by his political team. He further stated that even in Lagos the president’s political stronghold public dissatisfaction has reached alarming levels.
“We’ve conducted polling across the country, and in the North and Southeast, President Tinubu has a 91% disapproval rating. Even in Lagos, he is at 78% disapproval,” El-Rufai said. “In Ondo and Ekiti States, he is doing slightly better, but nowhere in the Southwest is he enjoying more than 50% approval.”
El-Rufai, a former ally of the president turned critic, argued that Tinubu’s administration has underperformed significantly in key areas such as security, economic reform, and trade policy since assuming office in May 2023.
“The guy is gone. He has performed miserably. The economy has stagnated, the security architecture has collapsed, and there is no coherent trade or investment policy. Everything seems to be going wrong,” he said.
Highlighting public frustration, El-Rufai urged Nigerians to reflect on the state of the nation over the past two years and consider alternative leadership options.
“We must ask ourselves: has life improved since May 29, 2023? If your answer is yes, that’s fine. But if not, then why should we continue down this path? Why not give others a chance?” he queried.
The former minister also questioned the transparency of federal revenue usage, asserting that despite increased revenue generation under the current government, there has been little to show in terms of tangible results or public infrastructure.
“They’re generating a lot of revenue, but where is it going? There’s no evidence of improvement in public services or infrastructure,” he added.
El-Rufai’s remarks come at a time of mounting economic pressure on citizens, marked by rising inflation, fuel price hikes, and currency instability. His comments are likely to further intensify political discourse as the 2027 general elections begin to emerge on the horizon.
Although the presidency has yet to respond to El-Rufai’s claims, the comments are expected to provoke strong reactions within political circles, particularly among members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), where El-Rufai was once a key figure before his defection to the SDP.
