“Tinubu Is Unstoppable in 2027” Tanko Yakasai Declares, Critics Raise Eyebrows
As Nigeria inches closer to another election season, political heavyweight and elder statesman Alhaji Tanko Yakasai has boldly declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu faces virtually no serious challenger in the 2027 presidential race.
In an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, Yakasai, who will clock 100 this December, expressed unwavering confidence in Tinubu’s grip on power, citing his incumbency, strategic political alliances, and a weakened opposition as the key reasons for his dominance.
“Right now, I don’t see anyone with the structure, reach, or capacity to seriously challenge Tinubu,” Yakasai stated with conviction.
But while Yakasai praised Tinubu’s political influence, many Nigerians are reading between the lines. The mention of “loyalty from ministers and governors” and support from even opposition figures has reignited debates about Tinubu’s alleged strong-arm tactics, questionable political deals, and the state of Nigeria’s democracy.
“Tinubu has solid control of the political system. Most governors, his ministers, and even some opposition leaders are with him. That kind of influence can’t be ignored,” Yakasai emphasized.
Critics argue that this “control” is more about political patronage than national progress. Some recall how Tinubu’s past was clouded with corruption allegations, including the infamous bullion vans seen at his residence on the eve of elections an image that many believe still symbolizes how power and wealth are used to silence opposition and secure electoral victories.
Interestingly, Yakasai dismissed recent claims that Northern political groups had endorsed a 2027 candidate. According to him, no formal consensus exists in the North, and current endorsements are mere personal opinions.
“To my knowledge, neither the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) nor the Northern Elders Forum has formally endorsed any candidate. The North as a region hasn’t made a collective decision,” he said.
With opposition parties riddled with infighting and internal sabotage, the path appears wide open for Tinubu unless a new, bold, and unbought political force emerges to disrupt the cycle.
When asked to assess the president’s performance so far, Yakasai avoided giving a direct answer, instead urging politicians to focus on national development.
“Our leaders must start putting the country first. We’ve been divided for too long along ethnic and religious lines. It’s time to promote ideas and programs that unite and move Nigeria forward.”
While his message on unity is noble, many Nigerians are asking: Is Tinubu’s government truly delivering on these ideals, or merely consolidating power through influence, fear, and political loyalty?
Yakasai also offered a personal reflection, attributing his long life to divine grace and family genes, proudly noting he is blessed with over 80 children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
“It’s all by the grace of God,” he said with a smile.
As the countdown to 2027 begins, one question lingers: Can anyone rise above the system and truly challenge the status quo or has the game already been rigged before the whistle?
