Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval to Dismiss Suspended Abia, Adamawa, Sokoto RECs
Abuja – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate’s approval for the dismissal of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto states.
The affected RECs, Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto), were earlier suspended over alleged misconduct during the 2023 general elections. Their removal is expected to be finalized pending Senate approval.
Tinubu’s request was conveyed in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session. The president cited constitutional provisions backing the termination, emphasizing the necessity of the move in upholding electoral integrity.
Constitutional Justification
Referring to the legal basis for his request, Tinubu stated:
“By Section 157, Subsection 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, I hereby request the Senate to consider and approve the termination of the appointments of the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners of Adamawa, Sokoto, and Abia states.”
He further highlighted that the three RECs had been under suspension since March 2022, prior to the advent of his administration, over allegations of electoral misconduct.
Legislative Implications
The Senate is now tasked with deliberating on the president’s request, which could set a significant precedent in the electoral process. The decision will also pave the way for new appointments to fill the vacant positions in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Tinubu urged the Senate to act expeditiously on the matter, signaling his administration’s commitment to electoral transparency and accountability. His letter concluded with an assurance of his highest consideration for the distinguished senators.
The move comes amid broader electoral reforms, with stakeholders closely watching how the Senate will respond to the president’s request.
