Tragedy Strikes in D.C.: Young Israeli Couple Killed Outside Jewish Museum
In a heartbreaking turn of events, two young Israeli Embassy employees, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, were shot and killed Wednesday night just outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.
Yaron and Sarah, who were engaged and planning to get married, had just left an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee when a gunman opened fire. Witnesses reported that the shooter shouted “free, free Palestine” after the attack. Both victims died at the scene.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 31-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago. He was quickly taken into custody inside the museum, and officials say he’s being questioned by local police and federal investigators. The FBI is treating the shooting as a possible hate crime, while Israeli leaders have called it a terrorist attack driven by antisemitism.
Friends and colleagues describe Yaron and Sarah as dedicated, passionate, and full of life. Yaron worked in the Embassy’s political department, and Sarah helped organize missions and visits to Israel. According to the Israeli ambassador, Yaron had just bought an engagement ring and planned to propose.
The tragedy has shaken both the local Jewish community and international leaders. Israeli and U.S. officials have condemned the violence and promised a thorough investigation. Extra security is now being put in place at Israeli diplomatic missions worldwide.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on justice for the victims and healing for the many lives touched by their loss.
