Trump Reveals Details of Vatican Meeting with Zelenskyy
Donald Trump, the current U.S. President, has shared information about his recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which took place during Pope Francis’s funeral at the Vatican on Friday.
Speaking to reporters at a New Jersey airport on Sunday, Trump expressed sympathy for Zelenskyy’s position, acknowledging that the Ukrainian leader “wants to do something good for his country” and “is working hard” amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Trump revealed his disappointment with Russia’s actions, stating, “I was very disappointed that missiles were flying, by Russia,” especially after discussions had taken place between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump’s peace envoy, Steve Witkoff.
According to Trump, Zelenskyy requested additional weapons during their face-to-face conversation—a request that Trump noted has been consistent for the past three years. This suggests Trump may not have fully committed to these demands during their meeting.
When asked about his expectations of Putin, Trump was direct: “Well, I want him to stop shooting. Sit down and sign the deal. We have the confines of a deal, I believe, and I want him to sign it and be done with it.”
Regarding his trust in the Russian leader, Trump responded cautiously, saying, “I’ll let you know in about two weeks or less,” while emphasizing the high casualty rate in the conflict, which he estimated at “3, 4,000 people dying every week.”
Trump also addressed past tensions with Zelenskyy, describing their relationship as “never bad” despite a previous disagreement caught on camera. He observed that Zelenskyy now seems “calmer” and believes the Ukrainian president “understands the picture” and “wants to make a deal,” despite facing “a much bigger force.”
