U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over stalled peace efforts in Ukraine. In an NBC News interview, Trump threatened to impose secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on buyers of Russian oil if Moscow obstructs his efforts to end the war.

Although Trump has been relatively friendly toward Russia since taking office in January, his recent remarks indicate mounting frustration. Putin has agreed to a temporary halt on energy strikes in Ukraine but rejected a full ceasefire. Meanwhile, Trump has also suggested new elections in Ukraine, aligning with Putin’s stance that could potentially remove President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Trump plans to speak with Putin again this week, following previous undisclosed calls. Despite the tensions, he insists on maintaining a “good relationship” with the Russian leader, believing progress is being made “step by step.” Russia has yet to respond officially to the proposed trade penalties.
