Turkey Optimistic as Istanbul Poised to Host Crucial Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks
As diplomatic tensions simmer between Kyiv and Moscow, a new wave of cautious optimism is rising from Ankara. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has expressed hope that the long-awaited Ukraine-Russia peace talks scheduled to take place in Istanbul could mark a turning point in the devastating conflict.
Speaking after an informal NATO meeting in Antalya, Fidan described the upcoming negotiations as a “very important step towards peace,” emphasizing that progress hinges on aligning the positions of both parties and restoring mutual trust.
Fidan revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is currently in Ankara for high-level discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, while delegations from Russia and the United States have already arrived in Istanbul a diplomatic convergence that, according to the minister, signals a growing appetite for peace.
“The very fact that these visits are happening now, and in Turkey, shows that the political will for peace is finally taking shape,” Fidan stated. “There is enough reason to be hopeful.”
Turkey, which has maintained a delicate balance in its relations with both sides throughout the war, continues to position itself as a potential broker of peace.
