Twitter’s Transformation to X: Elon Musk has hinted at the possibility of X, formerly known as Twitter, implementing a subscription fee for all users to access the platform.
During a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Tesla CEO and the world’s wealthiest individual suggested that X might introduce a charge for its user base. Currently, Twitter only charges users for its subscription service, X Premium, which provides benefits like a verified account checkmark and is priced at $11 per month in the US for iPhones and £11 in the UK.
Musk mentioned, “We’re moving toward having a small monthly payment for use of the system.” He argued that bots, automated accounts that can be problematic, cost only “a fraction of a penny” to set up. By increasing the cost of account creation to “a few dollars or something,” it could discourage bot operators. He also pointed out that every time a bot creator wanted to create another bot, they would require a new payment method.
Twitter’s Transformation to X
Musk, known for making impromptu statements, did not confirm whether X would definitively adopt a charging policy. X has been reached for additional comments.
In addition, Musk revealed that X currently boasts 550 million monthly users who generate up to 200 million posts daily. Previously, the platform measured its user base differently, using monetizable daily active users, which numbered 238 million before Musk acquired the platform in October 2022.
X Policy Against hateful content
The potential implementation of a paywall comes as the platform faces a significant decline in advertising revenue, its primary source of income. Musk has stated that a boycott by advertisers, driven by concerns about his leadership of the platform and its handling of inappropriate or hateful content, has led to a 60% drop in ad revenue.
While Musk’s conversation with Netanyahu was initially intended to focus on technology and artificial intelligence, it quickly turned to discussions of free speech and antisemitism. There have been accusations that X is not doing enough to address racist speech on the platform.
X combat antisemitism
Netanyahu expressed hope that Musk would find ways to combat antisemitism and other forms of hatred on X within the confines of the First Amendment. He stated, “I encourage you and urge you to find the balance. It’s a tough one.”
