In a development filled with both relief and tragedy, the kidnapped pupils and teachers of Apostolic Faith Montessori School in Emure Ekiti, who were kidnapped on January 29, have been released. The news, however, comes with a heavy heart as the driver, who was among the abductees, lost his life at the hands of the assailants. The assailants took the gruesome step of killing and burning the driver despite the release of the schoolchildren and teachers.
Efforts to obtain an official statement from the police spokesman in Ekiti State, Abutu Sunday, were unsuccessful. Nevertheless, sources within the community have confirmed the release of the victims to news outlet Channels Television. A senior police officer has also corroborated this information.
The kidnapped had sparked significant concern and garnered widespread attention, especially as the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N10 million for each of the 10 victims. It remains unclear whether any ransom was paid for their release.
Tragically, the fate of the driver took a dark turn. His charred remains were discovered in the bush, highlighting the brutality and ruthlessness of the assailants. The incident has once again underscored the grave security challenges faced by communities in various parts of Nigeria.
The Ekiti State Government, through the Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor, Olayinka Oyebode, officially confirmed the release of the pupils and teachers. The children and their teachers were reportedly brought to the Elemure Palace around 4 am on February 4.
In expressing gratitude for the timely release, Governor Biodun Oyebanji extended thanks to President Bola Tinubu for his support, which played a crucial role in the successful rescue mission. The governor also appreciated the collaborative efforts of security agencies and the support from the people of Ekiti, both at home and abroad, during the challenging security situation.
Governor Oyebanji acknowledged the traumatic experience the children endured during their time in captivity. Consequently, he directed the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, to ensure the children receive proper medical treatment and post-trauma therapy at the state Teaching Hospital in Ado Ekiti.
Stressing the commitment of his administration to eradicate crime and criminality in the state, Governor Oyebanji emphasized the determination to make the environment hostile for criminals. He pledged to ensure that those responsible for the killing of two Ekiti traditional rulers are apprehended and face the full weight of the law.
As the Ekiti State community grapples with the aftermath of this harrowing incident, the focus shifts to addressing the broader issue of insecurity and fostering a safer environment for residents.
