The rerun elections, conducted in about 20 polling units for the Ibiono Ibom State Constituency seat, faced setbacks attributed to the late commencement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the hijacking of materials by unidentified individuals. Sam Olumekun, the INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, announced the suspension of the exercise in Ikono-Ini Federal Constituency for two polling units where all election materials were reportedly carted away by hoodlums.

The disruptions prompted the suspension in line with the provisions of Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022. Further measures for the affected constituencies were expected to be announced after the Commission’s meeting on Monday.

Despite the challenges, it was reported that Emmanuel Udoh of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), vying for the Reps seat, maintained a lead in unconfirmed results from Saturday’s exercise. Udoh was reported to be ahead by 14,000 votes over his closest rival, Glory Edet of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Logistic lapses contributed to delays in the distribution of materials, with reports indicating that materials didn’t arrive at some polling units until after 12 noon. The late commencement raised concerns among voters, but many remained patient, hoping for a peaceful and orderly process.

One of the affected areas, Ward 11 Unit 2 in Nung Udoe Itak, Ikono LGA, faced delays, with materials arriving at 9:30 am. Despite the initial challenges, voters expressed their determination to participate, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful conclusion.

Mildnese Davies, a Presiding Officer at a center, highlighted the lack of vehicles to transport materials to various fields as a factor contributing to the delays. However, despite challenges, most polling units in Ikono recorded a peaceful exercise, with party agents and voters cooperating with INEC officials.

In the midst of challenges, rerun elections in Ini/Ikono some PDP chieftains expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise at Ward 11, Unit 2. Security personnel, including a joint team of police, army, and EFCC, were stationed in various units to maintain law and order.

As of the latest rerun elections in Ini/Ikono , collation of results was still ongoing at Ikono local government area for the federal house seat. The delays and disruptions in these rerun elections underscore the need for enhanced logistics and security measures to ensure the smooth conduct of future electoral processes in the region.
