Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, recently pleaded for patience from citizens weary of economic difficulties under his father’s young administration. Seyi’s call comes on the heels of heated demonstrations in Ibadan over the rising cost of living, as well as a lone protest in Uyo decrying worsening hardship.
In the nine months since taking office, President Tinubu has moved swiftly to implement ambitious economic reforms aimed at long-term prosperity. However, these sudden changes have also destabilized the value of the country’s naira currency, causing food prices to dramatically spike and squeezing household budgets.
Referencing a past speech by his father, Seyi reiterated that, “There is no joy in seeing the people of this nation shoulder burdens that should have been shed years ago…But we must endure if we are to reach the good side of our future.” While recognizing current difficulties, the president’s son expressed faith that young Nigerians today “will yield the fruits of this hardship.”
Seyi also posted upbeat social media messages, standing firmly with his father and the administration’s reform agenda. Hashtags proclaimed confidence that #NigeriaisinGreatHands, and fortitude now would lead to #RenewedHope.
As economic unrest threatens to undermine President Tinubu’s ambitious vision for Nigeria, Seyi Tinubu is undaunted. Alongside protesters airing legitimate grievances, he aims to rally youth around his father as the one to sit through today’s storm clouds to bring clearer skies ahead. Though the path is undoubtedly arduous, Seyi insists the next generation will reap prosperity borne of present adversities.
