In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through Zamfara State, bandits launched a deadly raid on Maradun town – the hometown of Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle. The early morning attack on Friday left two residents dead and around 30 others, including women and children, abducted by the marauding criminals.

Maradun, the headquarters of the Maradun Local Government Area, descended into chaos as the bandits stormed in around 2 am, firing sporadic gunshots and breaking into homes. Residents recounted harrowing tales of hiding for their lives as the bandits ransacked properties.

A traditional ruler, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed how the bandits attempted to break into his inner room after forcing entry into his palace. His wives and children narrowly escaped by fleeing through a separate passage. The ruler expressed dismay at the high level of insecurity plaguing the town, which was also targeted last Friday for cattle rustling.

Hassan Ibrahim, a local resident, described the attack as “terrible”, with the bandits strategically stationed at different locations armed with sophisticated weapons. He explained how he had to scale a wall and run for his life upon hearing their approach.

The audacious attack on the Defence Minister’s hometown has raised serious concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Zamfara and other northwestern states grappling with a severe banditry crisis. It casts a spotlight on the authorities’ apparent inability to rein in the emboldened criminal gangs, even in regions with significant political connections.

Residents are now calling on Matawalle, the former governor of Zamfara known for his controversial amnesty program for repentant bandits, to urgently intervene and address the worsening insecurity in his hometown.

As families mourn their losses and await news of the abducted victims, this latest attack serves as a sobering reminder of the challenges facing Nigeria’s security forces in their battle against the scourge of banditry and kidnapping plaguing the region.
