Lagos is currently dealing with a cholera outbreak, with the state government confirming 17 cholera cases out of 350 suspected cases across 29 wards. Tragically, 15 deaths have been recorded so far related to this outbreak.
The cholera strain has been identified as the O-1 subtype, which is associated with more severe disease. While cases are declining in some previously affected areas due to interventions, new cases are emerging in other areas.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, stated that laboratory testing confirmed the cholera subtype and revealed the varying pattern of new cases across different local government areas (LGAs). Environmental and food/beverage samples are being collected and inspected.
The state’s response efforts include:
- Activating the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre
- Distributing oral rehydration solutions
- Prepositioning cholera kits at health facilities
- Public health education campaigns
- Collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, WHO, and other partners
Commissioner Abayomi urged Lagos residents to support the government’s efforts by adhering to precautionary measures like drinking safe water, cooking food thoroughly, maintaining personal hygiene, handwashing, using sanitizers, and avoiding overcrowded places – especially important during the upcoming Eid al-Adha (Sallah) celebrations.
Reporting symptoms like watery diarrhea or vomiting immediately is crucial to save lives and prevent further transmission within communities. The government is providing free treatment for suspected cholera cases at all public health facilities.
The situation is being closely monitored, with regular updates to be provided. Residents are advised to follow public health advisories to ensure safety during this cholera outbreak.
This Cholera Outbreak highlights the importance of access to safe water, proper sanitation, and urgent response protocols to combat deadly infectious diseases like cholera. With a coordinated approach and public vigilance, this outbreak is hoped to be quickly contained.
