Following a military coup on July 26, 2023, the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) were praised by the Northern Senators Forum (NSF) for the lifting of the sanctions against the Niger Republic.

“We are happy that ECOWAS has addressed the progressive requests that we, both individually and collectively, have made on the matter, and we applaud their thoughtful and caring approach in dealing with these important issues,” they stated.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja by Senator Kawu Sumaila, the NSF’s spokesperson, the forum stated that the morally sound and sympathetic choice of the decision by the ECOWAS to remove the sanctions against the Niger Republic was evidence of the group’s dedication to human rights compliance, regional cooperation, and solidarity.

We are aware that taking this action will significantly contribute to ensuring the restoration of stability and economic prosperity in our region, as well as easing the suffering of the people of the Niger Republic.

“We are especially appreciative that the leaders of the ECOWAS have given our requests to open borders, bring back electricity, and remove the sanctions against the Niger Republic some thought.

“These actions will promote regional integration, trade, and cooperation in addition to having significant humanitarian implications.”We are convinced that the ECOWAS’s action will improve the lives of those in Nigeria and the Niger Republic and enable the reconciliation and mutual trust between all of the member states.

“We applaud ECOWAS for their responsiveness and understanding of the enormous challenges faced by our fellow West African nation, as representatives of the people and advocates for justice and democracy.

“We are committed to working to promote stability, peace, and socio-economic development throughout the region,” states the Northern Senators Forum. “We stand in solidarity with ECOWAS in restoring democracy and rule of law in Niger Republic and other west African countries.”

But the senators from the north urged the Niger Republic’s government and people to take advantage of this goodwill gesture from ECOWAS in order to speed up the process of reverting to democratic governance and use their tenacity and unwavering resolve to forge a stronger, more prosperous nation.
