In a dramatic turn of events, Philip Shaibu was impeached as the Deputy Governor of Edo State by 18 members of the state House of Assembly on Monday. This followed the consideration of a report from a seven-member panel set up by the Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to probe allegations of perjury and leaking government secrets against Shaibu.

The impeachment process commenced with the presentation of the panel’s report, and subsequent deliberations by the lawmakers. While the allegation of perjury was deemed unproven, the House found the accusation of leaking official secrets to be substantiated against the former deputy governor.

In a tightly contested vote, 18 members voted in favor of Shaibu’s impeachment, while one member abstained. Speaker Blessing Agbebaku, having secured the required two-thirds majority, declared Shaibu’s impeachment from office.

Swiftly following the impeachment, Governor Godwin Obaseki announced the appointment of 38-year-old Marvellous Omobayo as the new Deputy Governor. Omobayo was sworn in on Monday by Justice Okungbowa, with Obaseki expressing confidence that the young professional’s appointment would rally diverse interests within the state and inject renewed energy into the administration’s developmental agenda.
