In a dramatic turn of events that has reshaped Lagos State’s legislative landscape, the Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its long-serving Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, replacing him with Mojisola Meranda in what marks a historic shift in the state’s political dynamics.

The impeachment, which occurred on Monday, was reportedly unanimous, with assembly members citing “gross misconduct and abuse of office” as the grounds for Obasa’s removal. This ends Obasa’s nearly nine-year tenure as Speaker, a position he had held since 2015 while representing Agege Constituency I.

The transition carries particular significance as Meranda becomes the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Following her immediate swearing-in, the assembly also appointed Fatai Adebola as the new deputy speaker, marking a complete overhaul of the chamber’s leadership.

A member of the assembly, speaking to journalists, emphasized the sweeping nature of the changes: “All principal positions and standing committees in the assembly have been dissolved.” The source characterized the transition as “just a change of baton,” noting that “members of the parliament felt we have had enough of Rt. Honourable Mudashiru Obasa.”

Obasa’s removal comes amid a series of controversial decisions that had marked his final months in office. Most notably, under his leadership, the assembly had rejected 17 out of 39 commissioner nominees submitted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2023, a move that sparked public debate and necessitated intervention from the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC).

More recently, the Obasa-led assembly had proposed contentious legislation aimed at restructuring local governance in Lagos State. The bill sought to eliminate the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) established during Bola Tinubu’s governorship, proposing instead to revert to the 20 Local Government Areas recognized by the 1999 Constitution. This proposal had faced opposition from within the party, with APC Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi publicly maintaining that elections would proceed in both the LGAs and LCDAs in 2025.

The impeachment and subsequent leadership changes represent one of the most significant political shifts in Lagos State’s legislative history, potentially signaling a new direction in the state’s governance approach. As Meranda takes the helm, observers will be watching closely to see how these changes might affect the assembly’s relationship with the executive branch and its handling of crucial pending legislation.
