In a recent incident, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, publicly refuted claims made by Olumide Akpata, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Edo State, that he is a ‘son of the palace’.

The incident occurred during Akpata’s campaign tour to the Oba’s palace, where he referred to himself as a ‘son of the palace’ while eulogizing the king and expressing his party’s desire to govern the state.

However, the Oba swiftly interjected, clarifying that while Akpata is indeed a son of the soil in Benin, it would be incorrect for him to call himself a ‘son of the palace’.

In his words, the Oba stated, “When I heard him say he is the son of the palace, I had to speak to my people to know if any of my sons is now involved in politics. I acknowledge him as a well-known son of the soil.”

The monarch further emphasized his need to clarify the matter, given the presence of media and other people at the event.

Akpata, in response, apologized for the statement, explaining that he had equated the whole of Benin to the palace. He asked the Oba for forgiveness for the claim.

This incident highlights the importance of traditional institutions and the need for respect and accuracy when referring to royal titles and affiliations, especially during political campaigns.

As the Edo State governorship election is scheduled for September 21, 2024, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact the campaign strategies and narratives of the various candidates and parties involved.
