The Ikeja Sexual Offenses and Domestic Violence Court handed down the sentence on Friday after finding Daniels guilty of rape and sexual assault.

The victim, whose name is being withheld, said Daniels raped her in 2020 at his home after ordering her to remove her clothing as “punishment” for missing a church meeting. She reported the rape to the authorities in 2022.

Two other women also accused Daniels of sexual assault, but he was only tried and convicted in the case of the one victim.

During the trial, Daniels testified that he believed the women conspired against him. The prosecution established that he had inappropriate personal relationships with all of the accusers.

The life sentence represents the culmination of a two-year legal process since accusations first surfaced against the prominent young pastor. It sends a strong message regarding the prosecution of sexual crimes by religious leaders.

Victim advocates praised the life term as just, given the betrayals of power and trust evidenced in this case. Daniels said to have been a charismatic and rising figure in Lagos ministries before the allegations, displayed no visible reaction when his sentence was announced.
