An unfortunate incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday at the police divisional headquarters in Nneni, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. A group of yet-to-be-identified assailants launched an attack on the facility, setting parts of the building ablaze after throwing explosive devices.
According to sources and eyewitness accounts from residents in the area, the hoodlums attempted to forcibly free some inmates detained at the facility. However, their efforts were thwarted by the gallant response of the police officers on duty, who successfully repelled the attack.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack through its spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga. In a statement, Ikenga acknowledged that while the hoodlums hurled improvised explosive devices (IEDs) into the police facility, causing a fire that damaged portions of the building, no lives were lost during the incident.
“Our operatives bravely resisted the attackers, forcing them to flee the scene,” Ikenga stated, adding that no police officer was abducted, and no arms were seized by the assailants.
Ikenga assured the public that operations to apprehend the culprits are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
