Fake kidnapping

The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has apprehended a woman, Rosemary Ubah, for allegedly orchestrating a fake kidnapping scheme. The arrest came after Chiedozie Ubah, Rosemary’s husband, reported that his pregnant wife had left home for a hospital appointment but failed to return.
According to Chiedozie Ubah’s statement to the police, he received a phone call demanding a ransom of N2 million, with instructions to transfer the money to his wife’s account, as she had allegedly been abducted. Fearing for his wife’s safety, the distraught husband complied with the demand and transferred the requested sum, leading to his wife’s subsequent release.
Upon her return, the FCT Police Command launched an investigation and interrogated Rosemary Ubah. During the interrogation, she confessed to conspiring with a man named Walter Ezeala, a resident in the same neighborhood, to extort money from her husband through a staged kidnapping.
The police swiftly apprehended Walter Ezeala, who corroborated the allegations and admitted to receiving N800,000 as his share of the extorted funds, while Rosemary Ubah kept N1,200,000 for herself.
Authorities recovered N793,500 in cash, two FCMB ATM cards, and two Android phones from the suspects, which were likely used in facilitating the fraudulent scheme.
The FCT Police Command has stated that Rosemary Ubah and Walter Ezeala will face appropriate legal charges for their involvement in the criminal conspiracy and will be prosecuted in court in due course.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and thorough investigations, even in cases that initially appear to be straightforward. The FCT Police Command’s swift action in unraveling the truth behind the alleged fake kidnapping demonstrates their commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of citizens in the nation’s capital.
