Muri Ajaka, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State, has urgently called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the worsening security situation in the state. This plea comes in the wake of recent deadly attacks in some communities in the Omala Local Government Area, which left at least 19 people killed and an unconfirmed number of houses razed.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attacks occurred on Thursday when gunmen mobilized and invaded the communities of Bagana, Otutubatu, Iyade, Agbenema, and Agojeju-Odo in what was described as a “reprisal.” The attackers inflicted maximum damage, resulting in the loss of numerous innocent lives and the destruction of property.

In a statement issued from Abuja, Ajaka strongly condemned the recurring violence and senseless killings of innocent Kogites in these affected communities. He emphasized that the life of every Kogite is sacred and important, and it is the primary responsibility of the state government to protect its citizens from internal and external aggression.

Ajaka urged the current administration in Lugard House, the seat of the Kogi State Government, to take immediate action to put an end to the crises and heightened insecurity in the state. He called upon them to mobilize all necessary resources to solve the present conflict and prevent future occurrences, or step aside if they are unable to do so.

The SDP candidate further appealed to the President, Bola Tinubu, and his federal government to intervene in the matter since the state government has failed to protect the people. He expressed confidence that President Tinubu would not allow any part of the country to be overrun by insecurity and, therefore, urged him to declare a state of emergency in Kogi State, where over 35 people have been brutally killed, and the state government has done nothing about it.

Ajaka also made a call to the Inspector General of Police, all service chiefs, and the National Security Adviser to swiftly intervene and thoroughly investigate the cause of the persistent crisis in Kogi State. He emphasized the need for the security apparatus of the state to be deployed immediately to maintain order and stability in the affected areas.

Additionally, Ajaka sought humanitarian assistance for those displaced by the conflict and extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incidents. He urged the people of Kogi State to remain steadfast and cooperate with the security forces for the restoration of peace in the state.

The situation in Kogi State highlights the urgent need for decisive action from both the state and federal governments to address the escalating security challenges. The loss of innocent lives and the displacement of communities are unacceptable, and a comprehensive approach is required to restore stability, protect citizens, and bring the perpetrators of these heinous acts to justice.

As the governorship candidate of the SDP, Ajaka’s call for a state of emergency in Kogi State underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for extraordinary measures to address the crisis. It remains to be seen how President Tinubu and the relevant authorities will respond to this plea, but the urgency of the matter cannot be overstated, as the lives and well-being of Kogites continue to be threatened by the ongoing violence.
