Yemeni Armed Forces announced in a statement released on 21 May that it had successfully targeted a US drone flying over its lands.“The Air Defense Forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces shot down an American unmanned aerial vehicle, MQ-9 Reaper, while it was carrying out hostile missions in the airspace of Al Bayda Governorate,” Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in a televised statement. The statement noted that the MQ-9 drone was targeted with a domestically made surface-to-air missile, adding that video of the operation will be released on Tuesday.Just days earlier, Yemen targeted and shot down another MQ-9 drone over the Marib province.“With this operation, the Yemeni Armed Forces succeeded in shooting down five UAVs of this type during the Battle of the Promised Conquest and Holy Jihad,” Tuesday’s statement continued. Each MQ-9 Reaper drone costs roughly $30 million, meaning Yemen’s downing of five of these drones would have cost Washington around $150 million in its efforts to support Israeli-linked shipping routes.“The Yemeni Armed Forces continue to develop their defense capabilities in order to confront the American–British aggression against our country and continue to carry out their military operations in triumphing for the oppressed Palestinian people until the siege is lifted and the aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is ceased,” Saree concluded.

Less than a week prior, the Yemeni Armed Forces announced that it had targeted two ships, including a US destroyer.

“The naval forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces carried out a military operation targeting the American destroyer ‘USS Mason’ in the Red Sea with a number of appropriate naval missiles,” its 15 May statement said.

USS Mason was stationed in the Red Sea as part of the US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian, which seeks to protect Israeli-linked ships from Yemeni attacks.

Saree said in a speech earlier this month that so long as Israeli aggressions on Gaza continue, Yemen will strike unexpectedly.

Gaza is a red line. If the aggression continues, we will strike the enemy from where it does not expect, and [they] can’t even think of nor imagine where our strikes will hit them,” Saree said. “Even the Yemeni people will be surprised.”

On 3 May, Yemen announced its expansion of naval operations to cover the Mediterranean Sea in solidarity with the people and in support of the resistance.
