Stagnated National Assembly Budget: National Assembly’s Budget Remains Unchanged for 13 Years,” Says Speaker of the House of Representatives
Abuja—Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, revealed the stagnated National Assembly Budget has remained the same for 13 years, despite the impact of inflation and its associated consequences.
During a courtesy visit by a delegation from the African Business Roundtable in Abuja, the Speaker discussed the stagnated National Assembly budget and the need for increased funding. He stated that while the budget has remained stagnant, expenditures have increased over the years. In some instances, the National Assembly’s budget has even decreased compared to 2011 levels.
The speaker previously mentioned that President Bola Tinubu would soon present the 2023 supplementary budget to the National Assembly. This supplementary budget is expected to include provisions for increased salaries and allowances for public servants to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal.
Abbas also highlighted the House of Representatives’ efforts to strengthen inter-parliamentary relations. He mentioned that the 10th House has established over 60 parliamentary friendship committees to enhance relations with other parliaments worldwide. These committees play a crucial role in fostering relationships and required support to operate effectively.
The leader of the delegation, Mr. Dotun Ajayi, emphasized the importance of engaging with other parliaments, especially in light of recent developments, such as the coup in Niger Republic. He noted that such engagements could have a positive impact on international relations and economic assistance to West Africa.
Ajayi pointed out that Niger Republic had tensions with France in Europe, and given the circumstances, it was crucial for Nigeria’s parliament to engage with the French Parliament and the EU to address these issues effectively. He also mentioned the European Union’s substantial financial commitment to Sub-Saharan Africa and encouraged Nigeria to leverage these opportunities to benefit the country.
The Speaker assured the delegation of the House’s commitment to enhancing relations with other parliaments and addressing critical international issues.” Source and visit thedailycourierng for more news
